A dental crown (also known as a cap) is used to cover and protect a tooth that has been broken, weakened by decay, or treated with root canal therapy. Crowns may also be used when a large filling has compromised the remaining tooth structure.
Crowns are typically made from materials such as porcelain, metal alloys, or porcelain fused to metal.
Treatment process:
During your first visit, the tooth is prepared and an impression is taken. A temporary crown may be placed while your custom crown is being fabricated at a dental laboratory. At a subsequent visit, the permanent crown is fitted, adjusted, and cemented in place.
A properly fitted crown helps restore normal chewing function and protects the underlying tooth structure.
Dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) prosthesis used to replace one or more missing teeth. The teeth on either side of the space serve as supports (abutments) for the bridge. The replacement teeth, called pontics, fill the gap between the abutments.
Bridges are usually made from porcelain, metal alloys, or porcelain fused to metal.
Treatment process:
The abutment teeth are prepared in a similar way to crowns. An impression is taken and a temporary bridge is placed. The completed bridge is later fitted, adjusted, and cemented into position.
Replacing a missing tooth can help prevent surrounding teeth from shifting, maintain proper bite alignment, and support comfortable function.
