Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an infection of the tissues that support and surround the teeth. It involves inflammation and infection of the gums, ligaments, and bone that hold the teeth in place. Periodontal disease is one of the main causes of tooth loss in adults. Research shows that many adults experience some degree of gum disease during their lifetime. Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and periodontitis (inflammation of the gums and supporting bone) are the two primary forms of periodontal disease.
Maintaining good oral hygiene and attending regular dental examinations are important for preventing gum disease and detecting it early. Gum disease can sometimes progress without noticeable symptoms, making routine professional assessments essential.
Persistent bad breath
Gums that are red, swollen, or bleed easily
Gum recession (gums pulling away from the teeth)
Tooth or gum sensitivity
Early diagnosis and management of gum disease help protect the health of your gums and teeth. Treatment may include professional dental cleaning (scaling and root planing) to remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from below the gum line. Depending on the severity of the condition, additional therapies—such as locally applied medications or surgical procedures—may be recommended.
Regular dental visits and periodontal screenings are important to help maintain good oral health. If you have questions or would like to schedule an examination, please contact our office to arrange an appointment.
